This retelling of Aesop's fable is set in the Imperial Chinese Emperor's summer palace. After the harvest festival the Emperor and his family leave for their winter home, the ants settle into their well-stocked tunnels, and the grasshopper is left alone, hungry and cold. Graceful illustrations of ink and gouache on rice paper successfully render this cautionary fable in an Asian setting.

A Miao pourquoi story from Western China tells how the sun, hiding in a cave, hears a rooster crow, and, enamored of the sound, slowly reappears to the cheers of the townsfolk. As a token of his gratitude, the sun gives the rooster a small red crown. The illustrations reflect the traditions of ancient scroll paintings; the pacing of the story is synchronized with the pictures so that the visual and verbal elements form a seamless unit. Source note included.
